Frequently Asked Questions
- Q. When can I change or remove the jewelry?
- A. You may change your jewelry once your piercing is completely healed. The piercing should no longer seep or develop crust: the outer rim of the piercing will be the same color as the surrounding skin. When healed, the piercing will not be sore if you gently tug on it. If you are not comfortable changing your own jewelry, come back in and we would be happy to do so.
- Q. What if I suspect my piercing is infected?
- A. Do not panic. Minor soreness and irritation is common, especially in the first 48 hours. If you do suspect an infection, rinse with solution of 1/2 tsp. sea salt to 2 oz. water twice daily. Do not hesitate to consult a doctor if symptoms persist or get worse.
Avoid the Following During the Healing Process:
- Avoid oral contact.
- Avoid any unnecessary handling.
- Do not let anyone touch or handle your piercing.
- Avoid hot tubs, Jacuzzis, hot baths, and swimming pools.
- With oral piercings: avoid smoking, seafood, dairy products, yogurt, spicy foods and chewing tobacco.
- Avoid aspirin, caffeine, alcohol, drugs, and nicotine. All of these will slow healing.
- Never let a piercing come in contact with someone’s body fluids.
- Do not change your jewelry until your piercing is completely healed: it can cause trauma to the piercing site and inhibit healing.
- Avoid tanning oils, sand, and lotion.
- Do not use Vaseline, a product in which bacteria thrive.
- Do not use hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol, which can promote scarring. Use Dial soap and water to cleanse.
- Do not use Neosporin: it heals wounds so well that it may cause your skin to reject the jewelry.
